Make Working Interviews Work For You

Introduction: In the business world, more and more owners are employing a tactic known as “Onboarding” or “Working Interviews” to create a filter through which only the best staff will pass. During a working interview, prospective employees who have already gone through a face-to-face will be given a paid shift to work. During this time, the manager(s) will observe a variety of aspects of their performance. Some of these include work ethic, attitude, skills, cultural assimilation and customer interaction. Work Ethic: Let’s start with work ethic. We all know that a good one is important, but do we know exactly what it means? A good work ethic can be broken down logically into several factors of its own. These include integrity, responsibility, quality, discipline and teamwork ability. Integrity: In catering, for example, integrity is an especially important quality. Employees are subject to the constant temptation of bottles of alcohol, food, …

Happy New Year!

In 46 B.C.E. Julius Caesar declared, New Years Day, to take place on January 1st. You might not think that he could have realized what that day would become to the world.  How it would have the power to unite us across vast distances both real and imagined.  Could he have known that people all over the world would make this day holy, and use it to ceremoniously dispatch the bad memories of the year before, while welcoming the possibility of a brighter future?  I think he did. I think he knew exactly the implications of such a grand concept, because his choice of the word “January” was inspired by a particularly gifted roman god named “Janus.” Janus, the roman god of doors and gates, was believed to have two faces:  One looking back, and the other, looking forward. Like Janus, this New Years Eve I find myself looking in …

A Day In Our Lives

A night of restless sleep ends and we awake from dreaming of new ideas. We take a three minute shower, dress and then do wind-sprints to the office. We don’t walk in the door at the crack of dawn.  We are the crack of dawn. The sound you hear is me kicking our office door open as the sun rises. We breathe deep and our soul is filled with a vigorous lust for scheduling. “Zuzu,” our vicious 100 pound pitbull, takes a sentry position on the couch. Her mission: To brutally dismember anyone who stands in the way of our achievement of excellence. We make twelve cups of coffee, each, then fill our IV bags with them. We don’t have no time for no sipping.         We call all of our clients and thank them for choosing to let us make their lives easier. It’s why we do, what we do. We check our Facebook and Twitter accounts, adjust our ads, watch our analytics and strategize. Lunch arrives.  Vegan for Derick (our founder) and I, and one freshly killed adult …

Why We Do What We Do

The Legend: Legend has it that when our founder came up with the idea for Schedulehead, it exploded with so much force it shattered every light-bulb, windshield and cell-phone screen for a ten mile radius. In the paper the next morning, it was reported that the resulting shock-wave of creative energy left 3rd degree burns on the hearts of everyone around, inspiring them to take charge and become the leaders of a brave new world. They went forth and started  small businesses across the country, leading the charge toward a new and better life and then finally finding the success they had always dreamed of. To Be Different: And all this happened because what our founder and chief designer had invented wasn’t just another scheduling app; it was a way to make peoples lives better. We know you have heard this before, but just a few years later we have …

How Much Do You Waste On Staff Scheduling?

As one of more than 25 million small business owners in the United States*, you’ve got a million things to worry about.    From accounting to onboarding, marketing to customer service, you likely do it all.  And with business survival rates getting lower each year,* you need all the time you can get. If your business has more than twenty-five employees, staff scheduling can easily become a full-time job.  That means that you only have three options: A.  You can hire someone on a part-to-full time basis to do it for you ($24,000 per year and up). B.  You can do it yourself using spreadsheets and a cell phone, or one of those less intelligent programs out there and still lose thousands of dollars of your time. C.  You can open your free Schedulehead account, let it schedule your employees for for you, increase your productivity ten-fold and make more …
